Soraya Wright is a seasoned global risk management executive with over 30 years of experience managing complex risks for multinational corporations. She recently retired from Amazon, where she served as the Global Head of Corporate Risk & Claims. In this role, Soraya was responsible for developing and overseeing Amazon's global risk strategy, leading one of the world’s most intricate corporate risk and claims management programs, guiding the company’s captive subsidiary, and serving as a thought leader on the Enterprise Risk Management team.
In January 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Soraya to serve as a California State Commissioner on the Fraud Assessment Commission. In this role, she oversees the allocation of the State’s $90 million budget to combat fraud. Her previous board experience includes serving as a NonExecutive Director for Beazley Insurance Company, Inc., and she is the Founder & CEO of SMW Risk Management Consulting LLC.
Soraya’s illustrious careerincludes executive roles at prominent companies. At Target Corporation, she was Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management, recruited to establish and centralize the company’s post- breach risk management strategy. At The Clorox Company, she served as Vice President of Global Risk Management & Crisis Management, where she led the company’s enterprise risk program, global insurance strategy, and crisis management. Notably, she created and presided over Clorox’s captive insurance subsidiary. Her dedication to mentoring the next generation of leaders and fostering a culture of continuous improvement aligns with her vision for sustainable growth and robust governance.
Soraya has been an influential voice in the insurance industry, serving on the Client Advisory Board of leading firms such as ACE (now Chubb), AIG, FM Global, STARR, Marsh, and Willis Towers Watson. She is a frequent speaker on strategic risk management topics and has contributed significantly to community service. Her leadership roles include positions on the boards of Oakland’s Children’s Hospital Foundation, the East Oakland Youth Development Center, and the African American Arts and Culture Complex in San Francisco.
Soraya holds a BA in Business Administration & Economics from Holy Names University. She is a member of the Executive Leadership Council (ELC) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In recognition of her contributions, she was named a “Woman to Watch” by BusinessInsurance in 2015 and was listed among the top 100 Executives on the Empower Global Role Model list in 2022.
